Why Special Needs Services?

“My sister Annie is living her best life today with the greatest degree of independence possible thanks to the vision and assistance provided by Special Needs Services (SNS) of Ray County. My sister experienced a difficult social situation several years ago and her well-being was in jeopardy. Suzan Breen’s insight and thoughtful attention identified Annie to be at risk and Suzan took action to mobilize a team of stakeholders to help Annie through her difficult time.

As the leader of SNS, Suzan was not only concerned for Annie’s well-being, but sought out resources to help Annie be safe and retain as much independence as possible. SNS helped Annie move into a safe environment and help put her life back on track and Annie began thriving again at her sheltered workshop as well as emotionally and socially.

After successfully stabilizing Annie and watching Annie’s continued success, Suzan and her team at SNS found another living opportunity for Annie that has allowed Annie to enjoy more independence within her community in Ray County. SNS of Ray County has done an amazing job focusing on at risk individual’s safety and quality of life while seeking out resources for their benefit. Annie was previously being supported in a shared house with 24 hours in person staffing after her previous at-risk situation. With support and guidance to reach her goals, Annie is now enjoying living in her own apartment with minimal appropriate assistance while integrating with the local community.”

-Jason Brenneman, Relative of an SNS Client

“Special Needs Services (SNS) of Ray County goes above and beyond for their clients, friends, neighbors, and community members. I have seen it firsthand in my role in the community as a Ray County newspaper reporter. I cover all county events with Richmond News and during my time covering events - never have I seen a more open, encouraging, engaging, inclusive, and positive nonprofit.

SNS even implemented a program called Community at Play (CAP) where anyone and everyone is invited to these public events to "play." The very first event I covered was a July 2022 Water CAP event and it was an opportunity for people to let out their inner child, to remember what it is like to play and have fun - no matter the age. People laughed, played, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

SNS and CAP are positive and welcoming. Anytime I leave an event, I leave fulfilled and happy. They teach acceptance and compassion for anyone, people with disabilities and abled bodies alike. I have written a lot about this nonprofit and the people who run it, like SNS Director Suzan Breen and her enormous heart. I am grateful I have been able to do the hard work that goes into the love, planning, execution of plans, and time that is public. I highly recommend anyone considering working with SNS to do so. Please, find out what it means to have compassion, excitement, love, and "play" in your life. We each have our own gifts and every person matters, SNS certainly displays this energy.”
